It’s the sparkling centerpiece that sets the tone for the entire season, and when it comes to designing eye-catching Christmas trees, no one does it quite like Trista Lawson, the owner and stylist behind Trees by Trista (@treesbytrista).

For the past 12 years, Trista has been transforming spaces across the Mid-South, crafting extraordinary, tailor-made Christmas trees for family living rooms, elegant retail spaces, children’s hospitals, offices, and schools. Her work brings a sense of joy and wonder to every room she decorates, making her one of the most sought-after holiday stylists in the Memphis region.

“I actually started decorating Christmas trees with my mom at our family’s furniture store,” Trista shares. “We taught Christmas tree decorating classes for many years.” What started as a family tradition has grown into a beautiful business that’s been featured on television and in Apartment Therapy

After years of decorating and dreaming up dazzling designs, Trista has perfected her signature style—one that feels elegant and inviting, and is guaranteed to turn heads. We visited with Trista to find out how folks can bring that same festive flair into their own homes this holiday season.

Trista's Secret to a Showstopping Tree

Trista’s top tip for a showstopping tree actually comes from her love of gardening. “I know it sounds silly but as a Christmas tree designer and avid gardener this is my go-to secret—you need a thriller, a filler, and a spiller,” she shares.

  • The Thriller: Start with something bold and architectural.
    • Think branches, ferns, or spiked sprays that add height and drama.
  • The Filler: Next, layer in something lush and full.
    • This can be eucalyptus, holly, or other leafy greens that add texture and depth.
  • The Spiller: Finally, the most important element—something that cascades or drapes beautifully.
    • Picture crystals, ribbons, or delicate hanging ornaments that catch the light and draw the eye in.

Last, but certainly not least, Trista wants to remind folks that you are the artist, so make a one-of-a-kind floral installation that speaks to you and your family!
